As
a new writer, you will probably be very excited to attend your first literary
event or festival. “At last,” you will probably say to yourself; “I’ve made it!
I’ll be able to sit there selling endless piles of signed copies of my book to
hordes of adoring fans.”
Of
course, it doesn’t happen quite like that in real life, and some new authors
become disillusioned when they realise that most of the people there haven’t
come to buy their book, but to promote their own work.
Whatever
you do, however, don’t become disillusioned by this, because literary events
are a very worthwhile endeavour for authors, from the unknown first-timer, up
to best selling household names. The main purpose of events like these is not
to provide a direct selling outlet, but more to give you an opportunity to
promote your work and your brand in the long term, and to network with other
writers, publishers and book sellers..
It
is the perfect chance to learn more about the industry, to see how others
navigate the writing, publishing and marketing process. It was with this in
mind that I was delighted to attend the Authors Assemble event, held in the
beautiful surroundings of The Assembly Rooms, The Crescent, in Buxton,
Derbyshire, alongside one of the authors that we at Brindle Books are lucky
enough to represent, Dr David J Blackmore, author of the ‘Wellington’s
Dragoon’ series.
David
used the event as an opportunity to launch and showcase the latest book in the
Wellington’s Dragoon series: Behind The Lines, the third volume in the
adventure series about Michael Roberts, a young cavalry officer in the 16th
Light Dragoons, fighting against Napoleon’s armies. He gave a talk about the
books and took along some advance copies of the book to sign.

The Lines is available to order from Amazon by using the following link:

event had been organised by Kerry Fox and her team at Buxton Crescent Heritage
Trust.

“This is our first Authors
Assemble event,” Kerry told me, “but the plan is to make it an annual event
which will, hopefully, keep growing.”
Judging
by the wealth of talent on display here today, I suspect that Authors Assemble
will indeed become a regular and important literary event, and will continue to
grow year on year.
I
managed to get a few moments to speak with each of the authors, publishers and
book-sellers at the event, and found that there was something for everyone at
Authors Assemble.
In
no particular order, here are the attendees that I spoke to:

the area, the local Turnpike roads, and several ancient water mills. These
